Wintuneup Pro has an attractive user interface that is easy to use. The main functions are accessed using a navigation panel on the left. Further functions are accessed from the pane on the right, or in a separate window.
The main Overview pane shows basic operating system information, memory usage and CPU details.
The next function, Wizard, starts a maintenance wizard that cleans
the system registry, removes junk files, erases Internet history information and fixes
invalid shortcuts. This can free up a considerable amount of disk space, and should be run regularly to
keep your system clean. Unlike some other similar tools - including the Windows Disk Cleanup Wizard - the
Wintuneup Wizard is highly configurable and has options to specify files and folders to include or ignore.
These options are preconfigured to avoid removing needed files.
The Clean Up function allows the tasks performed by the Wizard - clean the registry, erase history, remove junk files, find duplicate files and fix invalid shortcuts - to be carried out independently.
The Optimize function has five options to help with tuning. There is a memory optimizer, which can provide an instant speed-up by reclaiming unused memory, and an Internet bandwidth optimizer, which ensures that your Internet connection settings are correct. There is also a performance monitor, which shows resources like CPU usage in a graphical display, and a task manager, which shows the tasks running on the computer and their memory and CPU usage. Windows XP has system tools that do a similar job, but Wintuneup's give you more information about each task.
The Protect function gives you access to a couple of privacy tools. Wipe / Delete File
Data erases the contents of deleted files which are otherwise recoverable using everyday data recovery utilities
like Uneraser. The Securely Delete Files option lets you delete files by
overwriting them multiple times so that even specialized forensic recovery tools will not be able to restore
them.
The Other Tools function contains five options. AutoStart Manager helps you manage the programs and tasks that launch when Windows starts up. Uninstall Manager is an uninstaller that has the ability to remove some programs that are hidden from the Add / Remove Programs control panel. There's a tool for finding empty folders, and a utility to analyze the use of disk space. This can help you see where your disk space has gone by showing you the largest files on your computer, and the disk usage per folder or file type.
The final tool in this category, Tweak Plus, is a basic configuration tool that provides access to some otherwise hidden Windows settings. It gives you some control over the options that can be accessed from Windows, as an aid to preventing other users of the computer from fiddling with the settings.
