Backup issues

Backups are corrupt / incomplete

The important thing to understand is that Site Backup CP does not create your backups. It simply issues a command to cPanel to download a backup, exactly as if you clicked on the Backup link in cPanel in the browser. Therefore if a backup appears to be corrupt, there is nothing Site Backup CP could have done to prevent it. Either cPanel generated it incorrectly, or your web server closed the connection before the backup could be fully downloaded. It is likely that the problem would have been the same if you had manually initiated the backup.

The cPanel backups consume a lot of memory and processor resources on the server. This can be a cause of problems, especially on overloaded shared servers operated by budget hosts. Many budget hosts may discourage the use of the cPanel backup facility, or they may configure it wrongly so it does not work. This is one reason why it is worth paying more for a better quality hosting service.

If your site is small and you cannot create reliable backups then you may be wise to look for a better host. If your site is large and you cannot create reliable backups then you might be advised to look for a different backup method than that provided by cPanel, which even the cPanel developers would not recommend for large sites. In both cases you should contact your web host to see what size of site they would consider to be the limit for using cPanel backup on their server.

Unable to download MySQL backups

Problems can occur when backing up MySQL databases, because the backup is created by calling another server, the one running MySQL. Using cPanel, a single command is issued to generate the backup, which simply results in the creation of a file to be downloaded. Site Backup CP cannot verify the contents of this file to ensure that it is complete. It simply downloads the file that was created by the server. Therefore we recommend that you make periodic checks of the contents of these backups to ensure that they are correct.

Errors or incomplete SQL backups are not the fault of Site Backup CP. The same result will occur when downloading the backup manually through cPanel. Contact your hosting provider for assistance.

Error backing up database

You may receive the message "Error backing up database ..." when trying to back up MySQL databases. This may be because an incorrect database name was entered. Make sure that the database name entered in Site Backup CP is the same as that listed in cPanel / Backups / Download a MySQL Database Backup.

Scheduling issues

The ability to schedule tasks from Site Backup CP is not restricted in any way in the trial version. However, the facility to add scheduled backup jobs automatically to the Windows Task Scheduler from within Site Backup CP itself is fairly limited. It is always possible to create scheduled backup jobs manually. This is described in the help file.

Backup jobs are not added to the scheduler

Site Backup CP adds jobs to the Windows Task Scheduler by calling a command line utility, schtasks.exe, in the background. Unfortunately if an error message is output during the attempt to add a scheduled task, you will not see it. You will only observe that the task is not added to the Task Scheduler. The only reason that we know of that could cause a backup job to fail to be added if the command line parameters are invalid. Avoid the use of non alphanumeric characters in the name of the backup set, as some of these non alphanumeric characters are not permitted in the task name by the scheduler.

Cannot add more than one job to the scheduler

When it creates a scheduled task, Site Backup CP uses the name of the backup set as the task name. However, the Task Scheduler does not allow more than one task with the same name to be created. If you need to delete or modify an existing scheduled backup task you must do this from within the Windows Task Scheduler. If you wish to create more than one scheduled task to back up the same Site Backup CP backup set, you must do this manually from within the Windows Task Scheduler. Alternatively, create a new backup set that has a different name but backs up the same items, to avoid a name conflict.

Scheduled jobs do not run

If scheduled backup jobs do not run when they are scheduled, this may be because the account they are set to run under in the Task Scheduler is not the same as the one used to create the backup jobs.

The details of your backup jobs are stored in the registry of the user account under which you are running Site Backup CP to set up the jobs. Therefore the Task Scheduler must use the same user account when it runs the jobs.

Internet connection issues

Site Backup CP uses wininet.dll, a component of Microsoft Internet Explorer, to connect with the web server and download backups when the default download option is used. If you use a proxy server, then Site Backup CP will use the same proxy server settings as Internet Explorer.

If the alternative download option is selected then Site Backup CP calls an external program wget to do the download instead. This program must be allowed to access the Internet (ports 80 and 443).

Frequently asked questions

How can I back up my settings and backup sets?

To back up your site details, backup sets, license key and other Site Backup CP settings so that you don't need to re-enter them if you move the software to a new computer, use the Registry Editor to export the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tech-Pro\Site Backup CP to a file.

Can Site Backup CP perform incremental backups?

No. Site Backup CP uses the cPanel backup facility to create a backup, and cPanel does not support incremental backups.
