Dr.Web CureIt is the free version of Dr.Web anti-virus for Windows. It is a standalone on-demand virus scanner that needs no installation and will not conflict with other anti-virus software. It is particularly good at curing (disinfecting) files that have been infected by a virus, making it an excellent tool for cleaning up after an infection.
Dr.Web CureIt is essentially a copy of the on-demand component of Dr.Web anti-virus for Windows with the latest virus updates included. It has all the functionality of the standard virus scanner, including Dr.Web's renowned ability to cure or disinfect files - a rare ability in a free anti-virus product.
When you download Dr.Web CureIt the file will have a randomly generated filename. This file can be run directly - no installation is required. An initial menu lets you choose whether to run the scanner or update it. Updating simply downloads a whole new copy with a different filename. The downloads are quite big, so this probably isn't something you'd want to do on a regular basis - the full product has a normal incremental updater. But most users of Dr.Web CureIt will be downloading it once to check or clean an infected system.
Upon choosing the Scan option, Dr.Web CureIt launches straight into an Express scan, which checks all the locations most likely to contain a virus. After this has completed, you may choose a Complete scan, which checks the entire system, or a Custom scan that allows you to sweep specific folders for viruses.
Dr.Web CureIt should not be regarded as an alternative to permanently installed, full-featured anti-virus products. It's intended as an emergency virus removal tool as well as a demo of Dr.Web anti-virus for Windows, and at that it performs very effectively.
