Most anti-virus and anti-spyware product work by identifying known malicious software (malware) and then removing it. This means that you are unprotected from new malware until after the product has downloaded a database update that describes it. Until the software developers have received the malware, added it to their database and your copy of the software has downloaded the update, your computer is unprotected from these new, zero-day exploits.

How it works
DefenseWall HIPS works by running your web browser, email client and any
software of uncertain trustworthiness in a virtual sandbox. This stops anything you download from the web,
receive by email or simply aren't sure you can trust from doing any damage to your system. Anything the untrusted software does
do is recorded in an event log, so that you can review each action and undo the changes made. DefenseWall HIPS is an essential
companion to conventional anti-spyware and anti-virus software, to provide complete 100% protection for your
computer.
DefenseWall HIPS includes a list of programs that may be used to introduce malware to your system, so it's ready to protect your computer right out of the box. These programs are called "untrusted" programs. This doesn't mean suspected viruses or spyware, but programs like your email client and web browser, which may be trustworthy in themselves, but are capable of introducing malicious software to your computer. Anything run from or downloaded by an untrusted program is itself untrusted, but you can also add and remove programs from the untrusted list.
DefenseWall HIPS allows you to secure important files or folders so that they cannot be accessed by untrusted applications. This will prevent a virus from infecting or corrupting an important file, or a trojan from stealing sensitive information. To make it clear that a program is untrusted and that its activities are restricted, DefenseWall adds "Status: Untrusted" to the program's window caption.
A strong point of DefenseWall HIPS is that it is largely "install and forget." Unlike several similar HIPS products, it gets on with the job of protecting your system without pestering you with pop-ups asking you to whether to allow this or that. If you think that DefenseWall has interfered with a legitimate action you can review the event log if you want to see what the program tried to do, and re-run the process as trusted if needed.
DefenseWall HIPS isn't completely transparent in action, because it isn't possible to distinguish with 100% accuracy between benign and malicious activities. But with minimal inconvenience it provides maximum protection from viruses, spyware, hijackers and other security exploits that are undetectable by other security products.
